Wandering Through The Carlsbad Flower Fields

The blooming season has arrived, and if you reside in Southern California, chances are you’ve heard about the famous flower fields at Carlsbad Ranch. The 50 acres of blooming flowers usually last for only 2 months each year, and has become one of the most renowned celebration of spring in the area. After many years of seeing this place on social medias, we finally made it in person this time!

The Flower Fields has large parking lots onsite. Since the place is only open at 50% capacity, we were able to find parking relatively quick. Once you have your tickets scanned and enter the field, you will instantly see acres of flowers planted along the hillside, layered with different colors.

The structure and design of The Flower Fields are rather simple, there is no particular direction that you need to follow and you can walk whichever way you like without the fear of being lost. At each row, there are several built out photo spots with benches available, but chances are you will still need to get in line for your turn.

PHOTO TIPS

With a scenery as picturesque as this, there is no doubt that all photos will look beautiful. However we have also summarized a few tips of ours on how to take memorable shots in these astonishing fields.

The Classic Bench Photos

The benches were placed there for a reason, so take advantage of them. This may not be the most creative way of taking a photo, but it is probably the most classic one that you simply cannot miss.

Using Side Angles

Though the upfront shots may be classic, photos taken from a side angle can be more fun and creative, it can also help hide the turf area so it will appear more as if you are standing among the flowers.

Here are a couple more to demonstrate the effects when standing further away:

Using Different Focus Points

Focusing on the blooming flowers or focusing on the happy human? We couldn’t decide, so we took a few with different focus points and we liked them all.

Facing Uphill Direction

As these flower fields are on a hillside, the upward slope makes it easier to capture the depth and layers of the view. There are also beautifully planted palm trees at the hill top, appearing as the perfect and symbolic California backdrop.

When a place is as beautiful and vibrant as this, you can’t go wrong no matter how the photos are taken. But a place like this also deserves to be captured in many different ways, so we’d like to share our ways of recording the lovely moments here at these breathtaking flower fields.
